A few facts about spinal cord injury:
- Over 40,000 people in the UK have spinal cord injury
- Spinal cord injury is one of the most devastating of all traumatic events.
- Approximately three people every day have an accident, injury or condition that results in permanent paralysis through damage to the spinal cord.
- The most common causes of spinal cord injury are falls, RTA's and sporting accidents
- A hospital stay of four to eight months or more is normal following injury, to recover from acute physical injuries and to learn how to deal with the loss of normal bladder and bowel function, sexual function as well as the loss of mobility, movement and independence.
- 30% of new patients become clinically depressed or anxious
- The rate of suicide amongst those with spinal cord injury is five times higher than that of the general population
- Despite good medical progress there is still no cure. Paralysis is permanent
